Synopsis:

Abstract:

The lectures introduce the main forms of interaction of some particles with matter. The goal is that the student gets an overview of what type of processes are possible and in which situations they may be dominant. Some applications to Medicine and to study the fundamental structure of matter are presented.

Requirements:

Knowledge of basic course of physics

Syllabus of lectures:

Outline:

1.General introduction

2.Bohr computation of energy loss

3.Bethe formula of energy loss

4.The Bragg peak

5.Energy loss as a statistical phenomenon: transport equation

6.Energy loss of electrons and positrons

7.Multiple Coulomb scattering

8.Coherent processes: Cerenkov and transition radiation

9.Interactions of photons

10.Interactions of neutrons

11.Special topics: energy loss of monopoles, energy loss in a quark-gluon plasma
