Synopsis:

Abstract:

The course is devoted to acquaintance with theoretical and practical grounding and applications of nondestructive testing (NDT), evaluation (NDE), and inspection (NDI, SHM) of materials and structures. Besides the standard NDT methods, the lectures also deal with the newest NDT/NDE procedures (acoustic emission, nonlinear ultrasonic spectroscopy and tomography, etc.). The education is completed by practical laboratory training in selected methods and also by excursions into industrial companies working on NDT/NDE.

Syllabus of lectures:

Outline:

1. NDT/NDE/NDI - short specification and possibilities of nondestructive testing and diagnostic methods and their applications. Standardization, qualification, and certification in NDT.

2. Radiology (RT) - radiography, radiometry, tomography, neutronography; thermography. 3. Liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing (PT, MT), eddy current and electro-dynamic methods (ET), leakage testing (LT).

4. Visual methods (VT), endoscopy, holography, vibro-acoustics, imaging and evaluation of material defects.

5. Ultrasonic methods (UT), ultrasonic imaging.

6. Ultrasonic thickness measurements, ultrasound velocity and attenuation. Ultrasonic measurement of elastic material properties.

7. Ultrasonic transducers and phased arrays, devices and their calibration. Determining of defect position, form, and orientation. Ultrasonic testing of welds, pipelines, and aerospace structures.

8. Nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy (NEWS), acoustic time reversal mirrors, guided waves testing.

9. Acoustic Emission monitoring (AT), detection and features of AE signal.

10. Localization of AE sources (linear, planar, and 3D), artificial neural networks and AE source recognition.

11. Practical applications of AE testing, monitoring of pressure vessels, pipelines, nuclear power plants, and buildings. Structural health monitoring (SHM).

12. Non-standard NDT methods. Optical fibers with Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), comparative vacuum monitoring (CVM).

Keywords:Nondestructive testing (evaluation), inspection and diagnostics of materials and structures, structural health monitoring, defects detection.
