Synopsis:

Prerequisites: Knowledge of school humanities objects (philosophy, history, psychology)

Target knowledge and skills: basic concepts and controversial topics in biomedical theoretical and applied ethics; be able to think critically in ethical contexts; argue and defend opinions in ethical dilemma situations; ability development of professional literature and development of empathy.

Requirements:

The exam: a discussion on one of the basic topics. The student demonstrates his knowledge of basic ethical concepts and the ability to orientate in ethical issues. The examiner can ask an additional question in the scope of the required literature and the presentations. The evaluation is performed according to the classification diagram (called test mirror). Test mirror is usually used at Czech Technical University in Prague.

Mitigation of study failure: The possibility of using consultation hours with the subject guarantor.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Ethics as a philosophical discipline, basic terminology of ethics; ethical problem, dilemma - solutions,current ethical controversial topics in

biomedicine - technological development, resource allocation, justice, transplantation, device replacements, overtreatement etc. History and present of

applied ethics in the context of bioethics, medical ethics

2.The relationship of legal and ethical norms, deontological codes of ethics and biomedical engineering

3.Patients' Rights and their observance in biomedical engineering.

4. Protection of sensitive data. Obligatory professional secrecy, breach of confidentiality. Conscientious objection. Data protection during publishing

activities, copyright.

5. Ethical aspects of human reproduction: assisted reproduction, technological possibilities, surrogate motherhood

6.Geno Technology - cloning, stem cells, embryonic research, the problem of genetic testing, CRISPR Cas 9

7.Ethical problems of organ transplantation, device replacements, resource allocation

8.Ethical standards and procedures for the research regulation in medicine, law, introduction of new technologies (artificial organs, robotics, IT), ethics

committee

9. Biomedical enhancement

10. Ethical issues in geriatrics, palliative care, disability, helplessness: quality of life and human dignity. Ethical issues of dying and death, euthanasia,

attempted suicide, DNR concept, Institute: „Previously expressed wish“, concept: „Futile treatment“.

Study Objective:

The aim of this course is to interduce basic ethical concepts, theories and issues of applied ethics to students with respect to their professional orientation, maintaining and developing of humanities education for technical-oriented students.
