Synopsis:

Communication is a fundamental principle and function of the city - in the historical as well as in the urbanistic sense. Public space is the platform for this communication: the physical public space of streets, squares, buildings, and land accessible to the public - and the virtual public space of the media. The communication of complex urban values in a vital public space is the basis for sustainable urban development.

Requirements:

- completion of the opening debate

- self-study of the assigned literature

- elaboration of a text on a given topic

- consultation of the text in progress

- defense of the text

Syllabus of lectures:

Examples of built environment enclaves whose development has been confirmed as sustainable in some cases and not in others will provide an introduction to the issue. Students will also learn to know the role of so-called urban communication in the development of the built environment, the topology and morphology of physical public space, and virtual public space, the different functions and natures of public space, and the dynamics of development and the principles of public space formation.

In the second phase of the study, each student will individually, in consultation with the teacher, focus on a specific area of concern, preferably within the framework of his/her main doctoral research.

The outcome of the study of industrial estuaries is then a written work in the form of an essay or research report on the subtopic.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The initial seminar consultation (group or individual) is followed by a self-study of the assigned materials. The second seminar consultation concludes the self-study; its output is a brief for a paper of approximately thirty standard pages. During the work on the text, the student consults with the teacher two to four times; at the end, the student defends the completed work.

Study Objective:

Students will gain an overview of the nature, forms, and functions of public space and the nature and importance of urban communication, of which public space is a platform; they will understand the communication of cultural, social, and material values in public space as a decisive factor in the development (or decline) of the built environment and learn how to shape public space in favor of sustainable development of the built environment and the sustainability of life on Earth.
