Synopsis:

Industrial fallow fields are fundamental phenomenon within the built environment and socio-economic and socio-cultural legacy. Their issues and the issues of their regeneration are more complex than generally thought. In this respect, he role of national and regional policies and support programs is significant, although often ambiguous.

Requirements:

- completion of the opening debate

- self-study of the assigned literature

- elaboration of a text on a given topic

- consultation of the text in progress

- defense of the text

Syllabus of lectures:

Examples of policies and implementation of industrial fallow regeneration projects abroad (mainly in France and the UK) since the 1980s provide an introduction to the field. Students will also learn about the dynamics of the emergence and development of industrial fallows and their socio-economic and socio-cultural framework - from the origins of the massive emergence of the phenomenon in the so-called 'rich north' to the domestic present.

In the second phase of the study, each student will focus individually, in consultation with the teacher, on a specific realm of the field, preferably within the framework of his doctoral research.

The outcome of the study is a paper in a form of an essay or research report on the sub-topic.

Syllabus of tutorials:

The initial seminar consultation (group or individual) is followed by a self-study of the assigned materials. The second seminar consultation concludes the self-study; its output is a brief for a paper of approximately thirty standard pages. During the work on the text, the student consults with the teacher two to four times; at the end, the student defends the completed work.

Study Objective:

Students will gain an overview of the origins, development, and regeneration policies of industrial fallows, from older foreign to contemporary domestic and regional ones.
