Synopsis:

The course extends and deepens the knowledge of the student in the field of thermal physics with a focus on important applications in energy engineering. The student will learn methods of thermophysical property estimation, characteristics of phase transitions and selected cases of heat and mass transfer. This knowledge will be applied to thermal design of a heat exchanger or another device related to energy engineering. Besides the encyclopedic knowledge, the emphasis will be given on fundamental understanding of processes, work with literature, internet databases, and software tools.

•Review of the laws of thermodynamics, their extension to open systems.

•Application of thermodynamic relations for calculating thermodynamic properties (e.g., enthalpy, sound speed) based on equations of state.

•Equations of state of real fluids: virial, cubic, multiparametric (e.g., IAPWS-IF97), basics of SAFT.

•Transport properties - thermal conductivity, viscosity, diffusivity.

•Phase interfaces, surface tension, and wetting.

•Metastable states and non-equilibrium phase transitions in fluids (condensation, boiling, cavitation).

•Heat and mass transport in selected cases – e.g., forced convection in a duct, heat transfer during condensation.

•Application of gained knowledge to thermal design of a device for energy technology.
