Synopsis:

There is no life without energy. ESC elucidate causes, processes and implications of conversion of energy from primary sources to applications.

•Introduction. Energy. Energy forms and energy conversions. World primary energy mix.

•Global primary energy reserves and resources.

•Fossil fuels (FF). Types and properties of FF. Secondary fuels

•Combustion of fossil fuels. Combustion systems and their efficiency, Environmental impacts of fossil fuels.

•Laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic cycles. Carnot cycle. Thermal efficiency.

•Rankine cycle (RC), thermal efficiency, increasing the efficiency of RC.

•Steam turbines in RC, energy conversion within a turbine stage, power plants and CHP plants.

•Classification of heat engines. Otto, Diesel and dual cycle. Stirling cycle,

•Brayton cycle (BC). Applications of the BC: stationary gas turbines and aircraft engines, IGCC and CC power plants.

•Heat pump and refrigeration cycles, coefficient of performance. Hydropower plants (HPP), types of water turbines, use of HPP by electric power systems.

•Nuclear reactions: fission and fusion. Nuclear reactor basic principles. Flow diagrams of different nuclear power plants.

•Renewable and alternative energy.

•Direct conversions: fuel cells, photovoltaic cells; thermoelectric, thermionic and MHD generators.
