Synopsis:

The subject introduces the students to the principles of the correct writing of research texts, studies and presentations; also with principles of preparation, execution and processing of biomedical experiments, including ethical issues of biomedical research.

Requirements:

Written final test, evaluation during the semester, evaluation of homework assignments.

Syllabus of lectures:

•Structure of research text. Basic characteristics and specifics of the scholarly text. Syllabus of the text, especially in biomedicine and biomedical engineering. Typical parts, their purpose, content and essentials: Introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion.

•Requirements for abstracts and their structure. Requirements for university qualification work and their structure; practical advice for their production.

•Information Sources. Research of the current state-of-the-art of the given topic. Types of research publications (monographs, primary research articles, research articles, case studies...). Topicality, relevance, quality and credibility. Review process and publishing process of the research article. Electronic and printed information sources; citation databases and digital libraries.

•Publication ethics. The meaning and importance of citing sources. Author ethics and copyright law in relation to academic work; plagiarism. Method of citation; paraphrases and quotations. Citation styles; citation managers.

•Style of research work. Formal rules and principles of the research text. The language of research work. Typography; typographic rules. Text proofs and proof markings. Numerical typography, mathematical typesetting. Examples.

•Results. Description and presentation of results. Figures and graphs.

•Tables. Diagrams and schemes. Principles and typical errors.

•Presentations. Presentation of a research work, especially diploma thesis. Content and formal requirements. Rules of preparing and performing of presentations. Oral presentation. Poster.

•Research and experiment. The objective of research and development (an introduction). Research questions and hypothesis. Importance of the experiment. Randomization.

•Research studies; their importance and types. Prospective and retrospective studies; observation and intervention studies. Randomized and non-randomized studies; cross-over studies and factorial studies; single- double- and triple- blind studies; open studies. Animal and clinical studies. Ethic aspects of studies (an introduction).

•Examples of research articles, discussion of characteristic attributes in texts (1 seminar).

•Extended abstract. Preparation of an extended abstract (homework) and its discussion (3 seminars).

•Presentation of research work. Preparation (homework). Presentations and discussion in a group (3 seminars).

•Graphs and schemes. Examples, discussion of homework (1 seminar).

•Request for the Ethical review board approval; essentials. Informed consent; volunteer’s record (1 seminar).

•Grant and grant application. Examples, discussion of homework assignment (1 seminar).
