Synopsis:

The subject is aimed at enhancing the communication and presentation skills and knowledge that are important for a graduate´s successful start in employment. An important part of the subject is training in effectively dealing with people. Students will improve in preparing and delivering professional speeches in front of a small group, in writing business letters and emails. They will learn to express criticism and praise and identify their preferred styles of conflict resolution and interpersonal interaction. As potentional non-medical staff in hospitals, they will become more familiar with the specifics of communicating with patients.

Requirements:

1. Course completion conditions:

a. Max 30 points for successful oral presentation.

b. Active participation in exercises (max. 20 points)

c. Max 50 points for a credit test

d. Max. 2 absences are allowed

2. The minimum points for classified credits are 50

Syllabus of lectures:

• Meaning of communication to individuals. Introduction to practical psychology, personality, behavior, behavioral development in the life of an individual, importance of paradigm shift and role of prejudices.

• Verbal and non-verbal communication. Examples of non-verbal communication.

• Dialogue management, active listening, empathy, asking questions

• Communication problems, effective communication.

• Feedback, praise and criticism. How to proceed and how to receive them. Sandwich method.

• Collaboration or power struggle? Communication styles. Communication manipulation techniques.

• 20th Century Communication theories with impact to today. Communication instructions. Assertive procedures.

• Consistency of experience and communication. Ethics of communication.

• Basics of presentation. Content and form. Role of preparation, dynamics and presentation structure. Rhetorical styles and mistakes.

• Conflict situations and solutions. Managing objections and providing argumentation.

• Writing skills. Writing business letters. How and what to read? The importance of reading.

• Specifics of electronic communication. Email, chat, social networks.
