- Synopsis:
-
This course will pick up where basic finite element courses stop. We will discuss some classes of failures of finite elements (shear and volumetric locking), and potential remedies (various types of reduced integration, nodal-integration discretizations, and multi-field approaches). Both solid and structural elements will be covered.
We will consider static and dynamic response, in the small- and large-strain regime. The theory will be illustrated with concrete examples
computed with in-house (open-source) finite element software, and the commercial program Abaqus (and its open-source look-alike Calculix).
