Synopsis:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with legislative requirements for monitoring of radiation quantities and their practical implementation. In addition, an introduction to the metrology of radiation quantities is part of the course.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Decree on the monitoring of the radiation situation, quantities and units of radiation protection in relation to the monitoring workplaces, drainages, persons, and surroundings, Monitoring program – requirements for the monitoring program.

2.Instrumentation and detection technology, the relationship between the measured variables.

3.Workplace monitoring, the problem of categorization of workplaces and workers, activities especially important from the point of view of RP.

4.Monitoring of surface contamination, personal monitoring (internal and external irradiation, dose estimation, limits and RP optimization, cost-benefit).

5.Monitoring drainages and surroundings (environment) – methods of monitoring.

6.The requirements for the release of radionuclides into the environment, representative person, scenarios of exposure

7.Methods of in situ monitoring and laboratory analysis of collected samples, sampling methodology.

8.Introduction to the metrology: legal metrology, certified and verified instruments, the requirements for accreditation

9.Calibration and verification of instruments.

10.Methods of metrology and standardization of activity, exposure, kerma, and absorbed dose.

11.Methods of secondary metrology, the establishment of standards.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1.Data processing and uncertainty of measured data in relation to monitoring of the workplace, drainages, surroundings, and persons.

2.Practical implementation of requirements of the monitoring program, determination of reference levels, estimation of effective dose based on measurements of different quantities.

3.In situ measurement of environmental contamination, gamma dose rate measurement.

4.In situ measurement of environmental contamination, gamma spectrometry in situ, sampling.

5.Calibration of instruments using standards.

6.Calibration of instruments using MC simulations for non-standard geometry.

7.Work with legislation - Elaboration of the application for release of radioactive material from the workplace of the 3th category, NORM.

8.Individual work - draft of the monitoring program for the selected workplace, integration into the national monitoring program.
