Telecommunications: What does it all mean? We look into history and the future. We'll try it wired and wireless, even at the speed of light (or almost...), on land, underwater, and in space. For example:

• How is electric current created? Painter Morse. Alexander, ring the bell! Telecommunications from the plane.

• Do you know a Twisted Pair? How a landline works.

• How the telephone network becomes the Internet….

• Light and dark. Transmission of information by light.

• Why are networks „mobile“? 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, etc…. The more G, the better. How here and how elsewhere?

• Satellite systems (J. Kepler + A. C. Clarke = E. Musk). What do Saturn and Earth have in common? Does navigation know about me? We will walk around Čakovice.

• How television (including Internet) works. A football match and a drastic Clash of the Titans.

• WiFi not working? What now…

• Why the Internet is not for people but for things.

• The biggest mistakes in the history of telco business.

The subject scrupulously avoids formulas and mathematical relationships (however, it does not always succeed...) - the keywords are principles and clarity.


Entry requirements: interest in telecommunications technology.

Exam Requirements:

The primary form of the exam is in-person.

Without the possibility of the personal presence of students at


while studying at MIAS, the exam will take place as follows:

The student takes a test containing a total of 25 questions.

After logging in, the test will be available in the CTU/MÚVS Moodle system.

For each correct answer, the student gets 4 points. Multiple-choice questions have an evenly distributed weighting of correct and incorrect answers. If you choose a wrong answer, the system will subtract points; having less than 0 points for an answer is not possible.

The test will be available to students only for the exam duration. Exam dates will be listed in the usual way in the KOS system. The test can only be taken once on a specific exam date. The test must be completed and submitted in the standard way in the Moodle system. Incomplete and/or unsubmitted tests will be graded „F“. The primary time limit for passing the test is 19 minutes and 59 seconds. After 20 minutes, the test can be continued even longer under the following conditions:

- completion time from 20 minutes to 24 minutes and 59 seconds: 10 points are subtracted from the test evaluation,

- completion time from 25 minutes to 29 minutes and 59 seconds: 20 points are subtracted from the test evaluation,

- completion time from 30 minutes to 34 minutes and 59 seconds: 30 points are subtracted from the test evaluation,

- passing time from 35 minutes to 44 minutes and 59 seconds: 40 points are subtracted from the test evaluation.

- After 45 minutes, the test ends definitively.

According to the resulting point evaluation, the student's classification is as follows:

A: 100-90 points

B: 89-80 points

C: 79-70 points

D: 69-60 points

E: 59-50 points

F: < 50 points

Example of final assessment: A student scored 95 points on a test he completed in 27 minutes and 35 seconds. In the final evaluation, he gets 75 points (95 for the test minus 20 for the extended time limit). The student is graded „C“.

A student can sign up to present one of the topics once per semester. The presentation usually takes place at the beginning of the lesson. The presentation is evaluated in the range of 0 - 10 points. These points are counted towards the points obtained from the test.

4. xDSL: topology, present and future development

5. Optical networks: topology, use

6. Cellular mobile networks: main technologies used, principles and parameters....

7. (GSM and) CDMA

8. Satellite communication

9. IPTV technology

10. WiFi networks and their use

11. Next Generation Network - NGN

12. Technologies for IoT: zigbee, sigfox and others

13. Capacity and performance planning.

14. Construction of the network

Syllabus of tutorials:

Not applicable. Exercises from the subject are not planned.

Study Objective:

The subject focuses on familiarizing with the basic principles of communication systems and networks for „non-technical“ educated listeners. Basic terms and terminologies are introduced from the field of telecommunications technologies, gaining an overview of communication technologies' history, present, and possible future.
