Synopsis:

This course focuses on various aspects of geoenvironmental engineering that deals with subsurface contamination and measures that lead to groundwater and soil cleanup.

Seminars will include lectures, measurements in laboratory, calculations, and modelling.

Requirements:

Knowledge of Vadose Zone Hydrology

Syllabus of lectures:

Lectures:

1/ Geochemistry background, soil colloids

2/ Distribution of contaminants in the porous media (soil vadose zone, groundwater aquifer). Measurements of the parameters for modelling of contaminant transport and fate in the subsurface. Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids.

3/ Toxic compounds in the subsurface: Overview of toxic compounds that occur in the subsurface, sources of toxic compounds, impact on the human body and living organisms

4/ Relevant environmental legislation and regulations

5/ Contaminated site characterization

6/ Monitoring strategies

7/ Remediation technologies I: Pump and treat, air sparging, solvent vapor extraction, soil flushing

8/ Remediation technologies II: Monitored natural attenuation, fracturing, Lasagna

process, electrokinesis, phytoextraction

9/ Remediation technologies III: In situ waste containment, solidification and stabilization, vitrification in situ

10/ Remediation technologies V: Permeable reactive barriers

11/ Remediation technologies VI: : In-situ and ex-situ bioremediation

12/ Remediation technologies VII: Emerging technologies

Syllabus of tutorials:

1/ Soil properties labs: particle size analysis and solids density

2/ Soil properties labs:: hydraulic conductivity and retention curve

3/ Soil properties labs:: soil chemistry: pH, organic carbon, electrical conductivyt

4/ Soil column chemical breakthrough experiment, calculation

Study Objective:

The students will gain knowledge in groundwater geochemistry, sources of contamination, site characterization and remediation technologies.
