Synopsis:

The course introduces students to the basic concepts and applications of electromagnetic waves, optics, optical devices, laser principles, thermal radiation and photodetectors. Individual topics are complemented by technical applications with a special focus on surveying and metrology.

Requirements:

Credit conditions - 100% participation in laboratory measurements, successful completion of laboratory measurement protocols and assignments

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Fundamentals of electromagnetic field.

2.Electromagnetic waves, their properties and propagation.

3. Polarization of waves, reflection and refraction of EM waves, dispersion, absorption.

4. Interference and its applications.

5. Diffraction of waves and its consequences.

6. Spectrum of electromagnetic waves and their practical applications.

7. Fundamentals of optical imaging.

8. Fundamentals of diffraction theory of optical imaging.

9. Fundamentals of optical instruments.

10. Doppler and Sagnac phenomena.

11. Basics of laser physics and laser technology.

12. Thermal radiation. Luminescence.

13. Detectors of optical radiation. Optoelectronic sensors.

Syllabus of tutorials:

2.-4. Basics of Matlab and advanced methods of processing and analysis of measured data.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the basics of electromagnetic waves with a special focus on optics and optoelectronics used in surveying instrumentation.
