Department of Material Engineering and Chemistry
Synopsis:

Students are supposed to get knowledge about relationships between structure of materials (chemical composition, microstructure) and their properties (mechanical, thermal, durability etc.). The methods of materials characterization – both chemical and physical – will be explained. Particular important relations will be illustrated by help of examples from the range (and not only) of building materials. Part of the lectures will be devoted individual groups of materials and their specific characterization techniques and properties.

Requirements:

123SH01 Stavební hmoty

123CH01 Chemie

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Structure of matter, chemical bonds, inorganic and organic compounds.

2. Crystalline and amorphous state of matter. Phase analysis.

3. Characterization of chemical composition of inorganic compounds.

4. Organic compounds and materials; macromolecules - composition, structure and properties.

5. Mechanical properties of materials as function of their composition and microstructure.

6. Pore system characterisation.

7. Surface of building materials and durability measures.
