Synopsis:

Computer-Aided Structural Design has been implemented as an optional compulsory course which provides students to gain knowledge in a computer-aided design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The objective of the course is to demonstrate the practical use of selected FEM software for the limit state design of various concrete structures. Namely, the focus is on computational models, reinforcement design, numerical modelling, crack control, deformation control and internal forces distribution.

Requirements:

Completion of homework assignments before the due date

Class attendance requirement (three absences allowed)

Syllabus of lectures:

Introduction of selected FEM software. Overview. Examples of structural design. Principles of numerical modelling.

Reinforced concrete frame design in two-dimensional environment: mesh settings, calculation settings, evaluation of results.

Reinforced concrete frame design in two-dimensional environment: reinforcement design.

Reinforced concrete slab design in two-dimensional environment: mesh settings, calculation settings, evaluation of results.

Reinforced concrete building design in three-dimensional environment: mesh settings, calculation settings, evaluation of results.

The comparison of various computational models: conclusion, restrictions.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Software environment and settings. Project settings. Finite Element Method. Linear analysis.

Reinforced concrete frame design in two-dimensional environment: model development, load application, standard supports, spring supports.

Reinforced concrete slab design in two-dimensional environment: model development, load application, supports

Reinforced concrete building design in three-dimensional environment: model development, load application, standard supports, spring supports.

The comparison of various computational models: time efficiency, computational accuracy.

Nonlinear analysis: Beam local nonlinearity, initial imperfections

Study Objective:

The course's main objective is to show students how to use efficiently the FEM software to design reinforcement for various types of concrete structures according to the limit state design method.
