Synopsis:

Deeper knowledge of building materials from the point of view of their architectural properties. New structural materials, composite materials, smart materials. Materials for exterior and interior surfaces. Choice of suitable material. Laboratory tests of some material properties - durability, frost resistance, water absorption, hardness.

Requirements:

No prerequisities.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Special concretes (HPC, fair faced, graphical).

2. Materials for facades (ceramic, stones, fibercement).

3. Wood and wood based materials. Engineered wood.

4. Materials for coatings.

5. Degradation of building materials.

6. Metals and glass in architecture.

7. Polymer materials for architecture.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Laboratory 1: Testing of paints I.

2. Laboratory 2: Testing of paints II.

3. Laboratory 3: Fair faced concretes.

4. Laboratory 4: Biodegradation

5. Student presentations.

6. Field trip.

Study Objective:

Deeper knowledge of architecturaly interesting imaterials, their properties and possibilities.
