Synopsis:

The aim of this course is to acquaint students with promising technologies of production of alternative energy sources (biomethane, biohydrogen) and valuable substances as raw materials for production of eco-innovative materials (bioplastics, composite materials) from waste biomass like agricultural, food, industrial and biodegradable municipal wastes.

Requirements:

mandatory attendance of seminars; elaborating and presentation of semestrial paper of a selected topic

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Overview of waste biomass, bioproducts, biofuels, technological potential of biomass

2. Conversion factors waste to bioproducts, pretreatment of wastes

3. Wet anaerobic fermentation ? principle, flowsheet, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

4. Dry anaerobic fermentation ? principle, flowsheet, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

5. Aerobic fermentation ? principle, products, flowsheet, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

6. Composting ? principle, products, flowsheet, description of technology, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

7. Biochar and pyrolysis ? principles, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

8. Biooil, biocrude oil, biodiesel ? principles, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

9. Gasification and combustion ? principles, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

10. Algae and its potential ? principle of cultivation, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, reactors

11. Substances with a high-added value ? overview of bioproducts, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

12. Production of bioplastics using enzymes, fungi and molds ? principles, flowsheets, description of technologies, process parameters, design of key machines and equipment

13. Legislation, risk operations, environmental impact, recycling, future of biofuels and bioproducts
