This study subject consists of several practical exercises and experimental demonstrations. The goal is to teach the students how to connect and operate electronic modules for ionizing radiation detector signal processing. NIM standard modules will be used predominantly. Additionally, the work with osciloscope will be exercised intensively. Graduates will be able to design, build and operate simple electronic circuit using NIM standard modules. This circuit should perform required duty, selected by the teacher. It is recommended to absolve the subject in the same semester as subject Instrumentation for Radiation Measurements.


Required prerequisities are 16ZPRA, 16DETE.

1. Basics of osciloscope operation, band width

2. NIM standard signals

3. pulse generators, detectors signals and preamplifiers

4. pulse shaping using amplifiers (delay line, semi-gaussian, trangle...)

5. Pole zero cancellation and base-line restrorer

6. Discriminators (for amplitude analysis purpose), single channel analysers, counters

7. Multi channel analysers

8. Triggering methods

9. Coincidence circuit, dependence of councidence rate on delay and coincidence window negth

10. Time-to-amplitude converter, time spectrometry

11. Pulse-shape analyser

12. Other modules (delay line, delay amplifier, gate and delay generator...)

13. Applications of circuits built using NIM standard modules (cosmic muon detection, dead time measurement)

14. Applications of circuits built using NIM standard modules (excited state lifetime measurement, pulse-shape analysis)

Study Objective:


Knowledge of osciloscope application possibilities and parameters. Knowledge of signal processing electronic modules possibilities and parameters. Knowledge of basic measurement techniques in nuclear instrumentation and their realization (coincidence measurement, time spectrometry, amplitude analysis/spectrometry, shape analysis).


Ability to operate signal processing electronic modules, ability to operate osciloscope, ability to design and build electronic circuits dedicated to selected purpose in radiation measurement.
