Synopsis:

The course focuses on probabilistic safety assessment of nuclear safety. The main topics are basics of probabilistic, random variables and distribution functions. The focus is on explanation of random variables and their application for the quality control and reliability assessment of mechanical or electrical components and simple structures and backup systems. The course contains elements of statistics, focuses on Bayesian methods in engineering, methods of reliability and risk assessment of complex systems (fault trees, event. Trees, common cause failures, human performance models. An important part is the understanding of uncertainties and their propagation in complex systems (Monte Carlo methods, Latin Hypercube Sampling) and introduction into Markowitz models.
