Synopsis:

Digital image correlation (DIC) is an optical method that allows the tracking of displacement and distortion fields. Its principle is based on the change in shape and displacement of a random pattern on the surface of the bodies under load. The method is relatively easy on the instrumentation of the measuring line, but the results are accurate and well represented graphically. At the same time, this method is a suitable intermediate step between experiments (experimental analysis) and calculations performed using mathematical models. The growing popularity of optical deformation and displacement evaluation using digital image correlation is evidenced by many publications, including widely cited articles in international impact journals.

Requirements:

Active participation in lectures and exercises.

Syllabus of lectures:

Optimal scanning technique and conditions for taking pictures during the experiment, basics of correlation, interpretation of results, practical knowledge, actual measurements and processing of results.

Syllabus of tutorials:

Same as for lectures.

Study Objective:

The aim of the study is to introduce students to the theory behind DIC as well as practical knowledge. Students will take part in real experiments and try to evaluate them themselves.

Study materials:

David Chambers: Digital Image Correlation: Advanced Methods and Applications (Materials Science and Technologies).
