Synopsis:

Fundamental hydrological processes in urbanized catchments and their mathematical description. Rainfall and rainfall data. Impacts of climate change on rainfall extremes and urban hydrology. Stormwater runoff from urbanized areas - generation and transport. Water transport in drainage systems. Hydrological processes in blue-green infrastructure objects. Measurement and monitoring of runoff, data processing. Simulation models and system analysis.

Requirements:

Knowledge at the level of basic hydraulics and hydrology courses.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction. Urbanisation and stormwater runoff. Fundamental hydrological processes in urbanized catchments

2. Rainfall and its impact on runoff dynamics. Types of rainfall data.

3. Impacts of climate change on precipitation extremes and urban hydrology.

4. Measuring and monitoring of rainfall in urban hydrology.

5. Stormwater runoff from urbanized areas - build-up and concentration

6. Models of surface runoff

7. Runoff through drainage systems - conceptual and physical-mechanical description of transport

8. Technical measures and concepts for the transformation of stormwater runoff

9. Hydrological processes in blue-green infrastructure objects

10. Measurement and monitoring of runoff, data processing

11. Measurement uncertainties, types of uncertainties

12. Mathematical models and system analysis

13. Simulation tools in urban hydrology.

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to provide a detailed introduction to urban hydrology and urban drainage, including practical exercises focused on mathematical modelling of the rainfall-runoff process in urbanised catchments.
