Synopsis:

Lectures on a design of timber elements and structures - static action, choice of computational models and methods, design of details and joints, fire resistance

Requirements:

Basic information about loading and basic knowledge of theoretical mechanics and statics, elasticity and strength of materials.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Materials suitable for timber structures, their properties and production

- production and extraction of wood, wood processing and structural cross-sections, development of wooden structures and history of wooden constructions, development of timber structures in terms of wood processing, in terms of joining elements

- terminology - elements of timber structures (bar elements - geometry, characteristic stresses and joints)

- design procedure

- computational models - aspects of model choice, boundary conditions, idealization of the structure (geometry, supports)

- methods of calculation of structures - types (linear elasticity, possibly plastic behaviour of wood) assumptions and use of individual procedures

- specifics of the design of wooden structures - shapes of elements, joining elements into structural units, joining of individual elements

2. Design of basic elements of timber structures

- determination of the strength - determination of the strength of wood stressed in the direction of fibres, oblique to fibres and perpendicular to fibres, the influence of load duration and moisture on wood strength

- tensile and compressive stress elements - design and assessment of elements stressed by axial force and further design of elements stressed by a combination of axial force and bending moment (uniaxial and biaxial bending),

- elements stressed by bending - design and assessment of elements stressed by uniaxial and biaxial bending, stability of bent elements,

- shear elements - shear stress of elements, reduction of solitary loads in the vicinity of the support,

- torsional elements - torsion of elements of massive cross-sections, the combination of torsion and shear force,

- elements stressed by a combination of axial buckling force and bending moment

3. Hall constructions and skeletal constructions and column constructions of timber constructions

- structural systems - skeletal, wall and combined, principles of design arrangement of load-bearing elements, loads

- skeletal structure systems - static action, stiffening of a load-bearing structure, choice of calculation model and calculation method, load cases and decisive combinations,

- calculation of the effects of vertical and horizontal loads on individual elements, dimensioning (rungs - bending, shear, torsion; columns - M + N including the effect of stability),

- stiffening elements - principles of location and shape of stiffening elements, division of horizontal load into these elements, stiffness (bending, shear, complex), principles of design of stiffening walls, dimensioning

- stairs - types, calculation, use of special elements and their influence on static action, prefabricated stairs

- wall beams - static action, principles of calculation and reinforcement

4. Joints of timber structures

- types of joints in terms of rigidity - individual types of joints in terms of rigidity with emphasis on time-dependent behaviour

- individual types of connections in terms of implementation - types of connections and connections, including settings with regard to the implementation

- joints in terms of static action - distribution of joints and their action in numerical models in the design and assessment of structures

5. Designed for the effects of fire

- basic cases of stress of individual load-bearing elements and joints - proposed basic types of load-bearing structures and joints

Syllabus of tutorials:

Design of a timber single-span hall structure with alternatively rigid columns base or hinge columns and a transverse horizontal saddle-shaped beam. Formwork design using OSB boards, purlin design, gable binding design and assessment. Design of a saddle truss made of glued laminated timber and design of horizontal and vertical stiffening.

Study Objective:

Within the course, students will be acquainted with hall buildings, skeletal structures and also with frame structures of timber buildings. An essential part of the design of timber structures are always joints, the design of which will be analyzed in detail. Great emphasis is placed on structural modelling.
