Synopsis:

General information about interaction between human beings and their environment. Information about water quality and pollution, flood hazard, air and soil pollution, landscape utilization and protection, soil erosion, climate change, sustainability, waste production and disposal, energy production and consumption. Questions of ethics, philosophy and globalization are discussed together. The topics are given on basic information level, respecting various backgrounds of the students.

2.Social, economical and environmental framework

3.Sustainable development

4.Basics of ecology

5.Atmosphere ? air pollution, ozone layer

6.Atmosphere ? solar radiation, greenhouse effect, Kyoto and Montreal protocols

7.Water ? sources, water pollution and waste water treatment

8.Water ? hydrological cycle, floods, droughts

9.Soil ? formation, classification, soil water

10.Waste management

11.Land reclamation and recultivation

Syllabus of tutorials:

Seminars: a team work focused on an evaluation of the environmental impact of a selected project.

Understanding relation of civil engineering to environment and supporting sustainable development in our society.
