The main goal of the course is to implement an introduction to the field of study, including the relationship between the content of biomedical engineering, the study plan, the requirements of Czech legislation and clinical practice. The partial goals are motivation for the non-medical health profession, a description of the content of studies and controlled professional practice, as well as the possibilities of other professional activities of students. The course also includes a description of the disciplines of biomedical engineering and a demonstration of selected relevant instrumentation, including a simulated ICU and artificial patients. At the end of the course, the specific role of the biomedical technician (profession) in health care will be described in connection with the legislation of the Czech Republic and international relationships and possible applications, including the role of professional societies in the Czech Republic. From the organizational point of view, the subject will be taught after 2 hours and for that reason only 7 topics of lectures and 7 topics of exercises are mentioned.


Assessment requirements:

Attendance at seminars is mandatory and it is possible to excuse only one absence without giving a reason. All other absences must be excused and documented. The tests may have to be replaced by another date.

Two tests will be included in the semester on the basis of lectures, on the basis of materials for exercises, on the basis of own exercises and also on the basis of compulsory literature given for this subject. One test will be in week 10 and the other in week 14. Each of these tests will consist of a written test that will contain 10 questions. These questions will be either open or ABC type, or with the image shown. The aim of the question will always be to identify the device according to various symptoms, ie description, drawing, picture, accessories, hospital situation, etc. and classify the device into one of three groups, i.e. diagnostic or therapeutic device or device in a clinical laboratory. Each question will be evaluated with a maximum of 5 points. In total, it is possible to get a maximum of 100 for both tests. The minimum requirement is then to obtain 50 points for both tests in total, with no minimum number of points set for each individual test. If you do not get the number of 50 points, you cannot get a credit.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Course introduction, overview of issues, motivational videos, examples, requirements for completion, organization of the subject, concept and overview of laboratories

2. Position of biomedical technician, activities, background, structure of the hospital, classification of medical instrumentation (examples from practice and from laboratories)

3. Diagnostic instrumentation - part 1 (medical instrumentation - overview)

4. Diagnostic instrumentation - part 2 (imaging systems - overview)

5. Therapeutic equipment - medical equipment, physical therapy, anesthesiology equipment, radiotherapy, robotic rehabilitation

6. Instrumentation for clinical laboratory (analyzers)

7. Examples of activities from practice, position of graduates (map), examples of work and other activities of students in the field of Biomedical Engineering

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Credit conditions, health and safety. Experimental teaching set with X-ray source, ultrasound diagnostic device, flexible endoscope, all examples of imaging systems in medicine.

2. Whole-body patient clinical simulator ECS (Emergency Care Simulator), monitor of vital functions.

3. Credit test 1, Electrocardiograph, defibrillator, pulse oximeter, tonometer for measuring blood pressure.

4. Devices to support blood circulation.

5. Dialysis machine, magnetotherapy, electrotherapy.

6. Simulators of physiological quantities and testers and analyzers of medical instrumentation.

7. Credit test No.2, name of the device, drawing, picture of the device or accessories and the task is to be included in the group.

As a special bonus, selective practice beyond the scope of compulsory participation in laboratories at companies where our graduates work will also be included.

Study Objective:

1. Ensure motivation to study relevant subjects.

2. To teach orientation within the medical devices in general.

3. Learn to recognize the basic and most common medical devices.

4. Learn the context of physical laws and basic principles of the most common medical devices.

5. Learn to describe the basic and most common implementations of medical devices.

6. Motivate and partially prepare for supervised professional practice.

In accordance with these above mentioned objectives, this course is intended only for first-year students in the field of Biomedical Engineering. The course is suitable for students who are interested in getting acquainted with the field as such, including the used instrumentation. Thus, students will better understand some contexts within the study, but they will also be better prepared for the mandatory parts of the study, such as supervised professional practice.
