Synopsis:

Basic and accessible methods of experimental examination of materials in microvolume, their application in the study of material properties and in the domain of failure research.

Requirements:

Elastomechanics 1,2, Fracture mechanics 1, Physics of metals 1,2.

Syllabus of lectures:

Microhardness measurement in the historic context of experimental methods development.

Indentors and process of indentation.

Microhardness testers, measurement methods, sources of errors.

Microhardness of thin layers.

Results interpretation.

Physics of methods using the interaction between electron beam and matter.

Wavelength and energy dispersion microanalysis.

Operating methods, limits of adoption, applications.

Transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy.

Nature and detection of signals (SE, AE, BE, EBSD).

Image forming and image interpretation.

Basics of fractography.

Failure micromechanisms, fractographic features.

Fracture classification.

Quantitative fractography, possibilities of computer image analysis.

Operating failure analysis (general policy).

Case studies.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1/ Microhardness measurement:

Observation of a dependence HVM on indentation force - specimen preparation, measurement using devices O.P.L. and DURIMET (4 hours), data processing, drawing up of report.

2/ Demonstration of SEM and EDAX - observation and documentation of typical fractures (4 hours).

Study Objective:

Knowledge:

Grounding in physical basics of selected experimental methods. Typical operating procedures, application limits.

Skills:

Application of the pursued methods in research of properties of solid state materials, and in study of damage process of bodies and structures.
