Synopsis:

Description of the interaction of atoms and molecules with electromagnetic radiation in the optical region. Basic experimental techniques of optical spectroscopy.

Basic topics:

1. Energy levels in atoms and molecules; Interaction with electromagnetic radiation; Spectroscopic transitions; Transition moments; Selection rules

2. Basic spectroscopic and photometric quantities; Shape of spectral lines; Homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening

3. Fundamentals of instrumentation (radiation sources, detectors, optical materials); Dispersive spectrometers vs. Interferometers; Single-channel vs. multi-channel detection

4. Atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy (flame and ICP AAS, ICP OES)

5. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy; Color of substances; Luminescence spectroscopy; Luminescence quenching; Non-radiative relaxation processes

6. Infrared absorption spectroscopy; Raman scattering spectroscopy

7. Use of polarized light; Linear dichroism; Fluorescence anisotropy; Raman scattering depolarization

8. Chirality and optical activity; Optical rotational dispersion; Circular dichroism, Raman optical activity
