Department of Architectural Engineering
Synopsis:

In the lecture series, basic information about the structure and current tendencies of monument care in the Czech Republic, the history of monument care and the development of views on the protection of monuments (including industrial heritage) up to the present are explained. Approaches to the restoration of historical buildings are shown on selected examples.

Furthermore, the lectures are focused on topics related to the own protection of historical and heritage-protected buildings. In particular, these are defects and failures of buildings, load effects and influences from the point of view of load history; non-force effects and influences, effects of forced deformation; durability and reliability; mechanical, physical, chemical degradation and corrosion processes; failures, reconstruction and rehabilitation of foundation structures, brick structures, concrete structures (reinforced concrete), prefabricated structures, wooden structures of buildings, protection of buildings against increased humidity and diagnostics of buildings.

Requirements:

Bulding sturctures 1 (124PSA1)

Building structures A2 (124PSA2)

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Degradation processes, defects and failures of buildings 1.

2. Degradation processes, defects and failures of buildings 2.

3. Surveys of monuments 1.

4. Surveys of monuments 2.

5. Diagnostics and evaluation of building structures.

6. Failures and conservation of stone materials.

7. Failures and conservation of plastered surfaces.

8. Failures and rehabilitation of the foundation structures of historic buildings.

9. Faults and rehabilitation of vertical load-bearing structures of historic brick buildings.

10. Examples from practice / excursions: e.g. the cathedral of St. Barbara.

11. Failures and rehabilitation of vault structures and ceramic ceilings of historic buildings 1.

12. Failures and rehabilitation of vault structures and ceramic ceilings of historic buildings 2.

13. Examples from practice / excursion: e.g. restoration of the Charles Bridge and the Cathedral of St. Vit

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Familiarization with the organization of exercises and the method of assigning partial semester assignments.

2. - 4. Selection and assignment of the structure/theme of the semester work to individual groups of students, selection of a suitable object.

5. - 8. Processing of the construction and technical survey of the selected object (based on a visual in-situ inspection).

9. Presentation of the processed first part of the exercise - analysis of faults (real or possible), analysis of causes, discussion.

10. - 12. Drafting of comprehensive remedial measures, sub-level processing of remedial measures of the selected structure/topic.

12. Presentation of the processed second part of the exercise - choice and justification of a suitable remedial measure, discussion.

13. Submission of partial tasks (in digital form) in the credit week (upload on the course page)

Study Objective:

The aim of the course is to acquaint the student with the complex issue of failures, rehabilitation and reconstruction of building structures and their parts. As part of the lecture cycle, students will be introduced to the issue of degradation of building materials, load effects and influences, issues of defects and failures of individual types of building structures. In addition, the lectures will focus on surveys and evaluation of the structures and technical condition of the buildings, analysis of the causes of failures and, subsequently, suitable remedial measures.
