Supervisor:
Department of Architecture
Synopsis:

Architecture not only as an object but in scale and the complex framework of the built environment, architecture articulating public space and articulated in its context, architecture as a poiésis, a phenomenon of sustainable development and an economic phenomenon; architecture as the result of a comprehensive creative process, which would impoverish itself if it overlooked and renounced the latest contributions of information technologies, namely virtual reality technologies and machine learning.

Requirements:

- work in the studio according to the semester program, with no more than 30% absenteeism

- meeting the set deadlines - presentation and defense of the set level of work in progress/processing of the so-called secondary task

- handing in the elaboration in the specified scope (posters/digital outputs/physical model/sketchbook - according to the assignment of the teachers)

Syllabus of lectures:

Students will systematically develop the ability to produce an analysis of an architectural task, grounded in a prior understanding of the task, which evaluates the site and wider relationships within the site and in a social and cultural context, values, limits, constraints, and SWOT in a complex context.

The conceptual design is based on the sum of the students' general expertise and understanding of the task, informed by the analysis: it is their poietic, not mechanical, algorithmic outcome. The elaboration of the concept applies the craft skills that students have acquired in their undergraduate studies, as well as new skills, building on the thematic seminars that are an integral part of the course.

The output of the students' work is a complex architectural design, albeit represented only by a slice of individual architectural design positions, developed in the context of socio-economic and economic contexts and with a view to sustainable development, using both traditional practices and contemporary technologies - virtual twin technologies and machine learning.

Syllabus of tutorials:

During the semester, the students go through four phases: analytical, conceptual, elaboration of the architectural design, and elaboration of documentation, representing the design and the student's work during the semester. The different phases are not separated by interfaces - on the contrary, the work in the positions of the phases is intertwined in a way that is consistent with authentic creative architectural work.

The analytical phase does not only provide the starting point for the solution of the problem: the analytical view interweaves with each other in feedback loops with the formulation of the concept and principles of the complex architectural design. The concept of the solution will be developed in the form of sketches and working spatial models. What follows is the elaboration of the concept in a comprehensive architectural solution in all categories of the approach, which have already been applied in the analytical position and which are prerequisites for the implementation of the architecture, including its structural design, energy, and material solutions, and the solution of the microclimate in the context of the life cycle of the building.

Teachers from Department 124 - Civil Engineering Structures - and (where possible) from Department 126 - Economics and Construction Management - are also involved in the teaching: in the thematic seminar blocks, students learn, among other things, about the economic, legislative and implementation framework for the development of the built environment. Students will also learn about advanced technologies applied to the design of architecture and buildings, in particular virtual reality technology.

The knowledge acquired in the thematic seminars will be directly applied in the studio work. In the operation of the studio, the students' ability to formulate a professional opinion, present opinions and solutions in progress and final solutions, and defend them in discussion with classmates as well as with the teacher is developed.

In addition to the topic and assignment, students work on a „side assignment“ in advance - usually by mid-November. This usually consists of a solution to an anticipatory, time- and cost-saving use of a selected part of the assigned area.

Study Objective:

The course shall provide a significant advancement in the knowledge, competences, and understanding of the architectural craft that students have acquired through their studies at the bachelor's level to the level of a mature, comprehensive, in all respects informed approach to architecture and urbanism. Students' knowledge and skills in architectural design will move substantially closer to the benchmark of best contemporary international practice.

Students will master the fundamentals of economics and construction management, learning to think about the development of the built environment in economic, legislative and implementation contexts.

Students will learn the basics of advanced architectural design technologies, namely virtual and augmented reality technologies and machine learning (so-called artificial intelligence). These technologies will in no way replace or suppress authentic architectural - poetic creativity; on the contrary, they will contribute to its development.

Study materials:

As part of the analytical work, students (in groups) will find, collect and evaluate specific and general study materials beyond the literature listed below.
