Lecturer:
Tutor:
Supervisor:
Department of Hydraulic Structures
Synopsis:

The course provides information and serves to acquire knowledge in the field of design and operation of weirs and waterways. It covers the following topics:

Weirs - basic concepts, classification, design fundamentals, basic hydraulic and static calculations. Weir foundation, groundwater seepage, weir stability. Fixed and movable weirs, classification, construction, main parts.

Waterways - navigation, inland waterways, structures on waterways: lock chambers, ship lifts, aquaducts, ports etc.

The first part of the semester is devoted to theoretical knowledge such as loads, design basis and basic static and hydraulic calculations. The second part of the course is devoted to weir gates, focusing on the interpretation and understanding of the principles of their design and function. The third part is devoted to inland waterways.

Requirements:

No entry requirements for the course, basic knowledge of statics and hydraulics is welcome

Syllabus of lectures:

1 - Weirs - historical development, basic concepts, purpose of weirs, weirs types, conceptual design.

2 - Input data for designing weirs (geodetic, hydrological, hydraulic, geological, hydrogeological). Hydraulic weir design.

3 - Foundation of weirs, weir tying, energy damping and channel fortification.

4 - Solution of seepage under the weir and buoyancy on the substructure. Principles of static design of weirs (loading of weir components, solution of weir stability)

5 - Fixed weirs - layout, relation to the watercourse, hydraulic aspects, types of fixed weirs, types of structures

6 - Movable weirs - basic parts, classification according to the type of gate, substructure and piers of movable weirs

7- Flap gate weirs, sluice weirs

8- Radial weirs, cylindrical weirs

9 - Hydrostatic weirs, inflatable weirs

10 - Control of movable weirs, principles of handling, automatic regulation.

11 - Waterways - history and current status, methods of navigating watercourses, types of vessels on inland waterways, classification of waterways.

12 - Design parameters of waterways, canals and objects on canals.

13 - Structures on waterways, structures for overcoming differences of water levels. Harbours.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1 - introduction, basic information

2 - hydrostatic loading of weir gates

3 - consumption curve of water overflow through weir gates

4 - consumption curve of water discharge below weir gates

5 - consumption curve of the downstream river channel

6 - design of the stilling basin

7 - uneven flow in the sport culvert

8 - filling the lock with short bypasses

9 - forces in the mooring lines

10 - stability of the lock wall

11 - air vent pipe at the weir spillway

12 - model loading of the flap gates

13 - consultation, submission of assignments, awarding of credit
