Synopsis:

The importance of mathematical cartography. Reference surfaces and coordinate systems. Cartographic distortions. Classification of cartographic representations. Representation of an ellipsoid on a sphere. Simple conic, cylindrical and azimuthal representations. Irregular, polyconic, polyhedral and general representations. An overview of representations used in the Czech Republic and worldwide. Selection, identification and evaluation of displays. Reference coordinate systems in GIS.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. The importance of mathematical cartography. Reference surfaces. Coordinate systems. Important curves.

2. Cartographic representations. Longitudinal distortion. Conformity conditions.

3. Azimuth and angle distortion. Principal rays. Area distortion. Distortion at known main rays.

4. Classification of views. Simple displays. Representation of an ellipsoid on a sphere.

5. Cone representations equidistant, equivalent, conformal.

6. Cylindrical representations equidistant, equivalent, conformal. Cylindrical projections. Azimuthal projections. Azimuthal

projections.

7. Imagery used in CR territory. Cassini imaging. Krovak display.

8. Representations used in the CR. Gaussian representation of the ellipsoid in meridional bands. UTM representation.

9. Non-true conic, azimuthal and cylindrical representations. Their modifications.

10. Polyconic views. Unclassified displays. Polyhedral applications.

11. Selection, use and identification of displays. Evaluation of imaging. Criteria for optimizing views.

12. Reference coordinate systems in GIS. JTSK/05.

13. Overview of views used in practice. Transformation of plane coordinates.
