Overview of CVD and PVD thin film technologies. Lasers for material research
and thin films, mechanismus of film growth, analysis of properties of surfaces.
Application of thin films in medicine. Examples of coating of tooth prosthesis,
coating of heart valves, laser fabrication of biocompatible layers and organic
thin films for medicine and sensors.

Differences between PVD and CVD deposition technology, criteria for selection
of deposition technologies
Representatives of PVD and CVD technologies, principles, advantages,
disadvantages (growth rate, particles energy, pressure, limitations, depostited
area,..)
Evaporation and sputtering (diode sputtering, magnetron DC and RF) deposition
methods as IBAD, ion plating
Deposition methods - MBE, ECR, LPE, sol- gel, CVD
Laser and laser applications in material research. Pulsed laser deposition -
principle, advantages, disadvantages
Focusation of laser radiation (Gaussian beam, excimer laser, divergence, minimal
spot size, focusing length, quality of laser beam)
Interaction of laser radiation with matter - models, femtosecond ablation
Transport of material from target - plasma plume. Analyses of plasma plume (CCD
camera, influence of pressure and spot size, energy density, etc.)
Characterization of layer properties
. XRD (Bragg Brentanno, rocking curve,), FTIR, Raman, NMR,
Morphology - SEM, TEM AFM, STM, SNOM.
Analyses of layers composition and bonds - XPS, ESCA, AES, WDX, PIXE, RBS, SIMS,
WDX.
Optical methods for film characterization - ellipsometry, transmission, optical
reflection, refraction index, luminescence)
Mechanism of film growth - Frank- van der Merve, Volemr Veber, Stranski-
Krastanov) , homoepitaxy, heteroepitaxy
Medical applications of thon films (HA layers, DLC layers, coating of prothesis,
heart valves,, biocompatibbe materials.
