Department of Nuclear Chemistry
Synopsis:

The course introduces fundamentals of nuclear chemistry applications in

research, development and production of radiopharmaceuticals. The first part of

the course is focused on issues of appropriate radionuclide selection, general

requirements for PET and SPECT diagnostics and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals,

ways of their application and labelling chemistry. The second part of the course

provides fundamentals of routine production and quality control of

radiopharmaceuticals (GMP rules) and discusses in detail production of a few

particular radiopharmaceuticals. In the end of the course, students will learn

about the last trends in the research of radiopharmaceuticals.

Requirements:

Knowledge of nuclear chemistry at the basic university course level.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Medicinal applications of ionizing radiation (external and internal sources of

IR, radiodiagnostics and radiotherapy).

2.Classification of radionuclides for nuclear medicine according to emitted

radiation, types of diagnostics and therapy, basic research of functions of

organism).

3.Imaging methods in nuclear medicine (gamma camera, SPECT, PET).

4.Radionuclides in diagnostics, their properties and preparation (gamma

emitters, positron emitters, preparation in neutron reactions, charged particles

reactions, generators, separation).

5.Radionuclides in therapy, their properties and preparation (beta emitters,

alpha emitters, preparation in neutron reactions, charged particles reactions,

generators, separation).

6.Choice of RN carriers, their chemical forms, specificity and selectivity

(elementary forms, little indicator molecules, indicator macromolecules, such as

peptides and proteins - hormones, monoclonal antibodies and their fragments,

indicator micro- and nanoparticles).

7.Deposition in tissues and organs.

8.Kinetics and metabolism, optimising of combination RN-carrier (role of

kinetics and metabolism of carriers and their catabolists in relation to half-

life of RN).

9.Methods of preparation of radionuclides carriers (chemical reactions, optimum

conditions, yields, purification, quality control).

10.Behaviour of radionuclides carrier in organism - changes of metabolism,

immuno-specificities and immunoresponsiveness.

11.Basic terms in the field of routine production and quality control of

radiopharmaceuticals, GMP rules, clean rooms etc.

12.Spectrum of various methods of radiopharmaceuticals production illustrated

via discussion of production of a few widespread, routinely produced

radiopharmaceuticals.

13.Recent trends in the research of radiopharmaceuticals.
