Birth of diplomacy and foreign policy. Formation of national states after 1848, imperialistic competition and colonies, position of the USA, Far East, Russia, the Balkans, German Drang nach Osten; World War I and the Versailles-Washington structure. Socialism, fascism, democracy. World War II and post-war bi-polarity, the Third World, decolonisation. Co-existence of two different systems, destruction of the Soviet block. The crucial position of the USA, new role of NATO, globalisation, conflict regions, terrorism.
