Synopsis:

In the first part, the sources of ionizing radiation (IR) used in biology and medicine are thoroughly discussed. Description of interaction of IR with matter and influence of ionizing radiation on biologically important structures and organisms follows. The last part of the course is dedicated to theory of radiobiological action, radiodiagnostic and radiotherapeutical methods, safeguard and dozimetry.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Description and comparison of irradiation sources utilized in radiation biological and radiation medicinal applications.

2.Radiolysis of water and selected inorganic compounds in water solutions.

3.Structural units of living organisms.

4.Influence of ionizing radiaton on glycides, lipides, amino acids, proteins, vitamins, ferments, hormones, nucleic acids.

5.Characterization of biological effects of individual types of ionizing radiation.

6.Effects of irradiation on chemical processes in living organisms.

7.Theory of radiobiological action, reparation processes.

8.Effect of irradiation on cells of simple and complex organisms, mutual comparison.

9.Effects of irradiation on humans, radiotherapeutical methods.

10.Imaging and radiodiagnostic methods.

11.Overview of basic calculations in radiation medicine and biology.

12.Safeguard, dozimetric measuements.

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

Getting knowledge on application of ionizing radiation in biological and medical science and research. Ability to apply obtained knowledge in practical aplications and calculations.
