Synopsis:

This course will concentrate on basic principles of transport of heat and mass (conduction, convection, radiation, heat pumps; transport of moist in building materials) with practical examples such as heat loss of a pipe, solar heating/cooling systems and heat loss thru a window (two plates of glass with a gas between). An excursion to a large solar-cooling installation with a solar-powered heat pump is a part of the course.

Requirements:

none

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Thermodynamic systems.

2. Thermodynamic states and processes. Equations of state.

3. 1. thermodynamic theorem, specific heat capacity.

4. Heat propagation through conduction - Fourier's law.

5.Heat conduction in materials with temperature dependent thermal conductivity coefficient.

6.Heat conduction in space (simple geometry, numerical solutions).

7.Thermal resistance, heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer from surface to medium.

8.Continuous heat propagation through conduction, heat conduction equations, boundary conditions, examples.

9. Heat propagation by radiation.

10. Heat propagation by flow.

11.Mass transport.

12. Diffusion, thermodiffusion, moisture balance in building structures
