Synopsis:

Building materials - basic course. Clasification of the materials. Structure of materials. Main properties of materials. Application of materials in building constructions. Introduction to material testing.

Requirements:

No prerequisities.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Materials in construction - history, European codes and standards.

2. Materials performance and its measurement.

3. Chemical, physical and biological properties of structural materials.

4. Binding inorganic materials - air lime, gypsum, hydraulic lime.

5. Cement, rendering and plastering mortar.

6. Aggregates for concrete - aggregate grading

7. Concrete - fresh and hardened concrete, properties of concrete.

8. Ceramics, clay masonry units - durability, requirements for CMU.

9. Metals - steel, metals used in construction.

10. Corrosion of metals, corrosion of inorganic materials.

11. Dampness in buildings - interconnection of voids and pore structure.

12. Plastics - thermoplastic material, thermosetting resins.

13. Materials for thermal and watertight insulations.

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Introduction, density, bulk density.

2. Laboratiry lesson 1:Cement I.

3. Laboratory lesson 2: Aggregates.

4.Laboratory 3: Cement II.

5. Laboratory 4: Modulus of elasticity

6. Laboratory 5: Tensile strength.

7. Laboratory 6: Thermal conductivity.

Study Objective:

Recognition of the main building materials. Basic knowledge of the materials properties and their testing .
