Synopsis:

Engineering description of water movement and solute transport in a soil profile. Hydraulic characteristics of porous media. Retention curve and hydraulic conductivity definition and estimation. Field vs laboratory measurements. Preferential flow. Basics of modelling. Basics of transport processes..

Requirements:

none

Syllabus of lectures:

see content

Syllabus of tutorials:

Induvidual use of relevant software in computer room: RETC to analyze soil hydraulic characteristics, HYDRUS simulation models in 1, 2 and 3D dimensions to simulate flow in variably saturated soil profile. Training and work on particular case studies. Analyses of results. Possibilities to apply in engineering practice.

Study Objective:

The course will provide theoretical knowledge of soil characteristics, water flow in soil profile and basic transport processes. The use of mathematical simulation models should allow the application of theoretical knowledge in solving of problems in engineering practice.
