- Synopsis:

The course is designed for students who have successfully completed the full secondary school English language course (at least the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR). It provides an introduction into English for Specific and Academic Purposes (ESP, EAP), i.e., into the fundamentals of vocabulary, functions, grammar, and style typical of professional oral and written communication situations (fundamentals of terms in mathematics and physics, definitions, graph descriptions, etc). It also covers professional oral and written communication on topics related to the undergraduate´s life and needs. It develops skills for free professional writing (writing a CV, letter of application, polite request). If necessary, revision of selected grammar topics is included.

Univesity studies, curriculum vitae, fundmentals of formal writing, letter of application. Basic principles of academic formal language, mathematical expressions. Word formation.

The course is run as a series of seminars following the topics and scope of the syllabus mentioned above.

Knowledge:
Morphology, syntax, and lexis at the level appropriate to the course, namely: word formation including terms, subordinate clauses, differences between formal and informal communication in speech and writing, subtechnical vocabulary, mathematical expressions and their use.
Skills:
To apply the acquired knowledge in everyday communication and in more professional contexts both in speaking and writing: to write a formal text, apply various reading strategires, translate texts into Czech, distinguish various language structures depending on purpose.
To qualify for admission to the higher level course.
