The lectures cover the entire range of non-metallic engineering materials, a majority of them are devoted to polymer materials which are most frequently used in mechanical engineering and the volume of their consumption highly exceeds that of the rest of non-metallic materials. Emphasis is laid on explanation and realization of basic terms in the field of non-metallic materials. The lectures also deal with standardization, environmental and economical aspects which follow from the different properties of non-metallic and metallic materials.

1. Basics of polymer materials chemistry

2. Plastic additives and their function

3. Molecular and supermolecular structure of polymers

4. Thermal properties of polymers

5. Physical and chemical properties of polymers

6. Mechanical properties of polymers, temperature and time dependency

7. Fracture behaviour of polymer materials

8. Degradation processes in polymer materials

9. Polymer mixtures and alloys

10. Overview of construction plastics and specific characteristics of each type

11. Composite materials, matrices and reinforcements

12. Technical rubbers, structure and properties

13. Construction ceramics, crystal structure and properties

14. Carbon materials, structure and properties

Syllabus of tutorials:

1. Plastic identification

2. Preparing samples for experimental measurements

3. Determination of tensile properties of samples from non-reinforced and reinforced plastics

4. Determination of bending properties of composite materials

5. Measurement of sample density from non-metallic materials

6. Determination of temperature-coloured characteristics of polymer materials

7. Soaking measurement

8. Monitoring polymer structure

9. Assessing rate of growth of polymer formations

10. Dimensioning of plastic pipes and calculating the size of allowable stresses by internal pressurisation

11. Build time dependency of polymer-based materials flexibility module

12. Conduct and evaluation of impact test at bend of non-reinforced and reinforced plastics

13. Diagnosis of non-homogeneity in structure of non-metallic materials
