Department of Solid State Engineering
Synopsis:

Description is provided of basic thermodynamic properties, atomary and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces. The physical models valid for bulk sysstems are juxtaposed with the changes due to introduction of new surface/interface. The theoretical treatment is followed by overview of experimental techniques applied to preparation of surface structures and to study of chemical composition and structural arrangement of the latter. In addition, brief overview is given of simulation approaches suitable for analysis and prediction of properties of selected systems. All the subjects are demonstrated on praktical exaples of case studies.

Requirements:

Basics of solid state physics

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Thermodynamic description of surface/interface, basic parameters. 2. Crzstalline structure of 2D szstems in the direct and reciprocal space. 3, 4. Surface electronic states (jellium model, nearly-free electron model, Shockley states, tightly-bound electrons model, Tamm states, electronic workfunction and contact potential, electron bends bending, semiconductor superlattices and energetic mini-bands, surface plasmons). 5. Surface vibration states. 6. Methods of clean surface preparation. 7. Experimental methods used for surface chemical composition analysis (AES, XPS, UPS, SIMS). 8. Diffraction methods of surface structural order analysis (LEED, RHEED, special XRD metods). 9. Scanning mikroskopic methods (SEM, STM, AFM, NFOM). 10. Special technics (electron/ionic emission microscopy, SEXAFS, microsckopy of Auger electrons, evanescent field techniques). 11. Experimental analysis of surface vibrations (spectroscopy of surface phonons, surface diffusion, surface melting). 12. Adsorption (surface thermodynamics, physical adsorption, chemisorption, surface segragation, desorption spectroscopy). 13. Coveradge, ultra-thin films and epitaxial layers (LPE, CVD, MBE, LB films, electrolytic deposition, fractal surfaces).
