Synopsis:

The purpose of this lecture is to introduce the undergraduate students to the study of the physical properties of solids.

Requirements:

Elementary quantum mechanics and statistical physics.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. Elements of quantum theory of solids 2. Bonding and vibrations of atoms in solids. 3. Structure and properties of crystals. 4. Lattice defects. 5. Diffusion in solids 6. Physics of metals and alloys. 7. Physics of dielelectrics 8. Physics of semiconductors 9. Magnetic properties of solids 10. X-ray, neutron, and electron diffraction.
