Synopsis:

The course provides an overview of advanced spectroscopic methods with high time resolution (ns-ps-fs), techniques combining high time- and space resolution, methods for single molecule and single nanoparticle study, and selected non-linear optical methods with emphasis on 2D techniques such as 3-pulse photon echo. Emphasis on the physical interpretation of spectroscopic experimental data and the type of information obtained by spectroscopic techniques to study molecules and nanostructures and their biological functions.

The course is suitable for PhD students who are working in research teams devoted to basic research in molecular photo-biology and photo-physics, biophysics, biology and physiology, pharmacology, and other fields that serve as foundations for molecular medicine.

Requirements:

Teaching is performed in the form of the controlled self-study with regular consultations. Except for the examination the student is required to write an extra study on a given topic.

Syllabus of lectures:

1.Overview of expected previous knowledge of classical optical spectroscopy and microscopy and their limits.

2.Parameters of molecules, nanoparticles and bio-functional structures accessible by spectroscopy.

3. Coherence of electronic states, wave packets and energy transfer in molecular systems.

4.Concept of multi-dimensional spectroscopic methods.

5.Techniques necessary for high time resolution ? ultra-short optical pulses and non-linear optics.

6.Non-linear microscopy.

7.Ultrafast spectroscopy of single molecules and/or nanoparticles.

8.Electronic structure and luminescence of low-dimensional systems.

9.Pump-and-probe spectroscopy of biomolecules.

10.Vibrational spectroscopy with high time resolution for study of biomacromolecules.

11.Raman spectroscopy, SERS, and combined high time resolution techniques.

12. Femtosecond photon echo techniques.

13.Selected ultrafast processes in biology and advanced methods for spectroscopic study of those.

14.Current trends in combined spectroscopic techniques development.
