Synopsis:

Lectures explaining the main streams of architecture development of the post-WW II period of the 20th century in Czechoslovakia and Central Europe with the emphasis on the issues of globalisation, contemporary societies and cities. The lectures are accompanied with excursions in Prague, Brno, Hradec Králové etc.

Contents: From CIAM to Stalinism and back. Czech Architecture after the WWII. German Architecture after the WWII. Finnish Architecture. Austrian Architecture. Alvar Aalto. Hans Scharoun. Socialist housing after WWII. Karel Hubáček and the SIAL Group. Czech Architecture after 1989. Young generation in the Czech Republic.

Requirements:

The minimum number of students to open the course is 5. EXCEPTION for self-paying students: if there are less than 5 students, the course will be taught in consultations.

1.Introduction, examples of previous works.

2.Physical requirements on façades.

3.New types of wooden elements.

4.New types of stone and ceramic elements.

5.Architectural concrete.

6.Concrete cladding - function, systems.

7. - shapes and structure of elements.

8. - details, fixing.

9.Lightweight façades - stick and panel curtain wall.

10. - materials for exposed and interior surfaces.

11. - details and fixing.

12. - sun-shading.

13.All-glazed façades - structural glazing, high glass wall.

14.Consultations and assessment.

Study Objective:

Students will understand basic relations between architectural concept and structural possibilities of load-bearing structures and systems.
