Synopsis:

The course is conceived as theoretical: practical qualification complex, which introduces students to changes in the organism as related to specialties of healthcare in old age. Particular attention is paid to changes in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, disorders of the internal environment, hydration and nutrition, thermoregulation disorders and psychological changes. Specific issues such as lonely, tortured and abused elderly and new trends in health and social care for the elderly.

Requirements:

Elaboration of seminary work.

Syllabus of lectures:

Aging, theory of ontogeny, gerontology, geriatrics, holism, salutogeneze.

Characteristics of the living, the hierarchy of values.

Somatic and pathophysiological changes in the body in old age, lifestyle, age and disease.

Common chronic diseases, injuries and other acute conditions, specific diseases in old age.

Responses to human aging, lifestyle, age and disease.

Mental disorders in old age, impaired perception, dementia, confused state, depression, suicidal tendencies.

Common disorders of the cardiovascular and respiratory apparatus seniors.

Common disorders of nutrition, water and salt management, and disorders of renal function in old age.

Peculiarities of pharmacotherapy in old age.

Health promotion and prevention in primary care - medical history, physical, laboratory testing, education, counseling.

Secondary care - acute clinical conditions, treatment, prevention of complications.

Tertiary care - chronic conditions, treatment, prevention of complications.

Immobilization syndrome, ulcers.
