Recall of physical laws applied to biology

FROM CELL TO TISSUES AND ORGANS

Cell structure and basic functions

Cell energetics: genesis and use of chemical, mechanical, electrical and thermal energy

Functional hierarchy of living organisms, from genotype to phenotype, principles of homeostasis and adaptation

6.5. 2016: Cell, membrane thermodynamics, membrane proteins, transport kinetics & energetics.

13. 5. 2016: Convection: fluids, gases.

20. 5. 2016: Transcellular transports. Transports in artificial organs.

27.5. 2016: Information, neural signalling, origin and use of mechanical force.

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

At the end of this cycle the student should

- understand the functional organisation of living organisms

- understand the basic concepts needed for a systemic approach to the human organism

- possess a good insight into integrated human functions interesting for bio-engineers

- be acquainted with experimental and investigation methods of the human physiology and medicine

- define interesting problems and propose their solving

- possess a sufficient vocabulary for an effective communication between engineers and physicians
