- Synopsis:
-
The overall course intends to look at just what intelligence is all about and what it means for a machine to be intelligent. The overall viewpoint is one from the new wave of artificial intelligence - more bottom up rather than the classical top down approach.
In the first set of 3 lectures we will investigate what exactly intelligence is in humans animals and machines. It is expected that the lectures will take on much of a discussion/interaction format with ideas being considered and argued.
In the second set of 3 lectures we will look at different concepts humans have of intelligence in machines and investigate the appropriateness and accuracy of such viewpoints. Here we will consider such as the Turing test, The Chinese room problem and philosophical approaches to intelligence.
In the third set of lectures we will consider what machine intelligence - and intelligence in robots in particular - is all about. To an extent this will involve a look at such as Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms, but practical examples will be given and finally possibilities of combining robot and human intelligence will be looked into.
