Synopsis:

The first part of this subject is attended to the characterization of systems modelled and to the explanation of such terms as modelling, verification, validation and simulation. In the next part, the models of equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics in porous media, then the equilibrium and kinetic laws (sub models) of the interaction processes, the patterns of

dispersion processes and of the moving of underground water are discussed. The attention is paid to the propagation of contaminants in rivers, water reservoirs and atmosphere, too. In conclusion, the geochemical codes and the principles of experimental procedures are mentioned.

Requirements:

1. The basic knowledge of physical chemistry (chemical reaction equilibrium and kinetics in heterogeneous systems, diffusion processes) and of inorganic chemistry (speciation in solutions, chemical properties and behaviour of soil elements, etc.).

2. The knowledge of principles of differential equation application and numerical methods of their solution.

Syllabus of lectures:

1. The feature of modelled system (mathematical models, system and its elements, modelling, verification, validation, simulation, parametric studies).

2. The basic description of the migration process in porous media (1D-, 2D- and 3D-models, retardation coefficient, the processes of interaction, dispersion and convection.

3. The patterns of equilibrium states and kinetics of interaction processes (one- and multi-components systems and the influence of equilibrium and kinetics on the migration).

4. The patterns of dispersion processes (mathematical models and the influence on the migration).

5. 5.The patterns of convection processes - of the moving of underground water (mathematical models and the influence on the migration).

6. The patterns of migration in fissures (fractures) of rocks.

7. The propagation of contaminants in rivers and water reservoirs (the basic types of mathematical models).

8. The propagation of contaminants in atmosphere (boundary layer of atmosphere, the origin of pollution, the basic types of mathematical models).

9. The review of geochemical codes and their application to the speciation calculation.

10. The experimental methods for the study of interaction processes.

11. The experimental methods for the study of dispersion and diffusion processes.

12. The methods of the determination of hydraulic parameters (hydraulic conductivity (filtration coefficient), hydraulic height, hydraulic gradient).

Syllabus of tutorials:
Study Objective:

The postgraduates obtain the knowledge relating to modelling principles of contaminant migration in soils, rocks, rivers and marginally in atmosphere. Then, they obtain the competence to the evaluation and differentiation of individual types of migration models from the point of view of their applicability, furthermore to the assessment of the influence of partial processes, as advection, interaction, dispersion and radioactive decay, on migration as a whole.
