Basics on signal transmission over optical fibres in communication networks. Sources and detectors of infrared radiation for optical communication. Transmission properties of optical fibres. Single channel optical fibre links. Signal multiplexing. Multiple channel optical fibre links. Coherent optical communication. Optical signal switching. Optical fibre networks. Services in electronic communication networks. Trends in development of information systems using optical fibre networks for signal transmission.

Basic knowledge of optics and general methods of signal transmission.
- Syllabus of lectures:

1. Classification of optical fibre transmission systems. Basic components of optical fibre links. Dependence of maximum span of optical fibre links on its component signal properties
2. Signal channel optical fibre links: Dispersion properties and bandwidth of optical fibres. Signal properties of semiconductor infrared sources and detectors. Combined effect of optical fibre dispersion and dynamic spectral properties of infrared sources on reach of optical fibre links
3. Multiple channel optical fibre links: Classification of multiplexing methods of signals transmitted over optical fibres. Time division multiplexing (TDM), electrical frequency division multiplexing (EFDM) and optical wavelength/frequency division multiplexing (WDM, OFDM). Code division multiplexing (CDM).
4. Coherent optical fibre links: Basic characteristics, requirements placed on their components, achievable reach, utilisation in OFDM, applications
5. Optical signal switching: Classification and basic methods. Circuit switching in space, time and frequency. Packet switching in space, time and frequency
6. Services, networks, integration. Optical local area networks (OLANs) - basic characteristics, transmission media, elements and components, topologies, access methods, provided services. Multiple level (hierarchical) OLANs, metropolitan area networks (MANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Backbone and access broadband digital networks.
7. Development trends of systems for information transmission utilisation of optical fibres.

To acquire basic knowledge on methods of optical signal transmission.
Skills:
To make students able to assess suitability of deployment of optical fibre networks in particular situations. To familiarize the students with development trends of optical fibre networks for information transmission.
