Synopsis:

Internal and external irradiation and contamination from natural sources (mainly from Rn and daughter products) in uranium mine and ore processing, isotope Uranium 235 enrichment. Nuclear fuel - processing, enrichment and reprocessing - hazard assessment. Nuclear reactor hazards. Hazards and risks connected with radioactive sources and accelerators. Radioactive waste storage, intermediate waste storage site, ultimate waste disposal site. Methods of dose and contamination measurements, spectrometric identification of radionuclides.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction - sources and hazard of irradiation, external/internal contamination, legislative: Act on Peaceful Utilization of Nuclear Energy and Ionizing Radiation (the Atomic Act) including Amendments and Additions to Related Acts, decrees of State Office for Nuclear Safety.

2. Cosmic and terrestrial rays, natural decay series radiation, radon and daughter product. Occupational health hazard, population health risk.

3. Uranium mining, chemical mining, processing plant. Waste materials and sludge hooper as environmental contamination. Occupational irradiation and internal contamination of miners. Safety work rules.

4. Nuclear fuel - processing, enrichment and reprocessing - hazard assessment. Radioactive waste storage, intermediate waste storage site, ultimate waste disposal site.

5. Nuclear reactor hazards at regular condition and maximum credible accident, plans for the case of accident.

6. Hazards and risks connected with radioactive sources and accelerators.

7. Methods of dose and contamination measurements, spectrometric identification of radionuclides.

Knowledge:

Students will learn about the potential risks of mining, processing and use of uranium as fuel. A comprehensive overview of the legislation focused on the safety aspects of radiation and possible contamination or exposure.

Abilities:

The orientation of the current legislation with focus on safety and risks from using of ionizing radiation.
